encaustic paintings

This group of paintings originated as an exercise in simplification.

I began by looking at previous work and selected elements of them I’d like to focus on.  I took these ideas and applied them to eight-inch panels.  The intent was not to replicate them but use them as a point of reference.

I soon discovered this concept was in no way simplification.  The intimate size of the pieces demanded greater resolve.  Their complexity took on a life of it’s own.

This was not an exercise in simplifying but rather amplifying.
